Session:Climate–adaptation interactions–sustainable solutions for a changing planet
Conveners: Martin Wattenbach, Genxing Pan, Changming Fang
Agriculture delivers the fundamental basis of human existence and
development now and, with an increasing demand, in the future. However, this role can only be maintained if the production methods are able to overcome the limitation in resources. One core limitation is the loss of fertile agricultural land due to the fast increase in urbanisation in many world regions with a hot spot in Asia. Urban and peri-urban agriculture (UPA) might serve as an multi-benefit option in an urbanised world to make agricultural production more sustainable, by using wastes, idle land and water bodies in cities as resources to produce food and reduce GHG emissions. UPA could also contribute to the resilience of cities to extremes by delivering local food resources which would make city dwellers more independent from imports from potentially a旻挀琀攀搀 areas outside the boundaries of the metropolitan area. UPA can also potentially decrease the urban heat island e旻挀琀. The session invites contributions presenting urban farming solutions, green belts, agroforestry, and other adaptation measures and research on their efficiency, innovative measurement methods to estimate GHG emissions, nutrient and water fluxes, as well as studies on their local/regional climate effects.
